Description
A Single Pearl, Perfectly Suspended
There is a particular magic to a solitary pearl. Not a strand, not a cluster — one luminous sphere, hanging in space at the hollow of the throat, moving as you move. The Perla Pendant Necklace distills the pearl’s quiet power to its essence: a single freshwater pearl, hand-selected for lustre, suspended from a fine gold chain that seems to disappear against the skin. The effect is of the pearl floating — unconnected, effortless, inevitable.
Pearls have been treasured for millennia precisely because they need no cutting, no faceting, no human improvement. They arrive from the water already perfect, their glow coming from within — layers of nacre built up over years, each one catching and softening light. The Perla honours that natural perfection by giving it the simplest possible stage: one pearl, one chain, nothing else.
Design Notes
The pearl measures approximately 8–9mm — the sweet spot where presence meets delicacy. Smaller pearls can read as shy; larger ones demand attention. At 8–9mm, the Perla is noticeable without being declarative, the size that draws a second glance rather than a stare. It is round, with a clean surface and the deep, satiny lustre that separates fine freshwater pearls from the merely pretty.
The pearl is simply drilled and threaded onto the chain through a discreet gold bail, so it moves freely — sliding a few millimetres as you turn your head, catching light differently with each movement. This mobility is deliberate: a fixed pearl is a static object, but a sliding pearl is alive. The chain is a fine cable link in gold plate, 45cm long with a 5cm extender, so the pearl can sit at the collarbone or drop slightly lower depending on your neckline.
The Pearl
Not all freshwater pearls are equal. The Perla’s pearls are graded AA+ — the top few percent of the harvest — selected for three qualities: lustre (that deep inner glow, not just surface shine), surface cleanliness (no visible blemishes to the naked eye), and roundness (true spheres, not potato or button shapes). Each pearl is matched by hand; no two are identical, because no two pearls grown in water ever are — but each meets the same standard.
Freshwater pearls are remarkable in another way: unlike saltwater pearls, which are bead-nucleated, fine freshwater pearls are nearly all nacre — solid pearl through and through. This gives them exceptional durability and a depth of lustre that improves with wear, as the pearl absorbs tiny amounts of the skin’s natural oils. Your Perla will literally get more beautiful the more you wear it.
Craftsmanship
The chain is assembled link by link, each join soldered closed (not merely pinched) so it cannot pull apart with wear. The clasp is a spring-ring in matching gold plate, tested for fifty open-close cycles before approval. The pearl’s drill hole is smoothed and the bail is shaped to cradle it without abrasion — a small detail that prevents the silk-thread sawing that ruins cheaper pearl pendants over time.
Every Perla is finished by hand: the chain is polished after assembly to remove any tool marks, the pearl is wiped with a soft cloth and inspected under daylight-balanced lamps (fluorescent light lies about lustre), and the finished necklace is coiled — never folded — into its box to prevent kinking.
Materials
Pearl: genuine freshwater cultured pearl, 8–9mm, AA+ grade, natural white with subtle rose overtones. Chain: brass core with 18k gold plating, 45cm + 5cm extender. Clasp: gold-plated spring ring. Nickel-safe. Total weight: approx. 4.1g.
How to Wear It
The Perla is the definition of a foundation piece — the necklace equivalent of a perfect white shirt. Wear it alone and it elevates everything: a plain black top becomes evening-ready, a simple kurta gains polish, a blazer looks intentional. The pearl sits at the exact point where eyes naturally rest in conversation, so it quietly frames your face.
For layering, the Perla is unmatched. Its fine chain and single focal point mean it stacks beautifully: try it with the Chaine d’Or Necklace at a slightly longer length for a gold-on-gold layer, or with a longer pendant for a graduated effect. The pearl’s soft organic glow contrasts gorgeously with the sharper geometry of chain necklaces. It also pairs with everything in the collection — pearls are famously democratic, flattering every skin tone and every other gemstone.
Occasions
If you could only own one necklace, this would be a strong candidate. The Perla moves from office to wedding without changing a thing: professional enough for the boardroom (pearls are the original power jewellery), refined enough for formal dinners, and traditional enough for family celebrations where you want to look polished without outshining the occasion. It is also a beautiful bridal piece — understated elegance that photographs timelessly and won’t date in your wedding album.
Gifting
Pearls are the traditional gift for milestones: graduations, first jobs, motherhood, significant birthdays. The Perla arrives in Zenwia’s signature navy gift box with a card explaining the pearl’s grading — a thoughtful touch that helps the recipient understand what makes it special. It is one of our most gifted pieces for new mothers, and a frequent choice for bridesmaids (buy several and each pearl’s slight individuality becomes part of the charm).
Care Instructions
Pearls are organic gems and ask for gentle treatment — remember “last on, first off”: put your Perla on after cosmetics and perfume, and remove it before swimming, exercising, or sleeping. Pearls and chemicals are enemies; even hairspray can dull nacre over time. After wearing, wipe the pearl with a soft, dry cloth to remove skin oils and perspiration — this is the single most important habit for keeping lustre. Never use ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemicals on pearls. Store the Perla flat in its box, away from harder jewellery that could scratch the nacre. Restrung or inspected annually, a fine pearl pendant lasts generations.
