The star setting is the Etoile’s signature and its secret weapon. In a standard four-prong stud, the metal does nothing for the stone. In a star setting, the pointed metalwork between the prongs catches light itself, creating the illusion of a larger, more complex stone — a twinkle with geometry. It’s an old jeweller’s trick, and it works beautifully: the Etoile’s stones look bigger and brighter than their millimetre measurement suggests.

Design Notes

Each stud centres a round brilliant-cut stone, approximately 5mm (about 0.5 carat equivalent), held in a six-point star mount. The star’s points extend just beyond the stone’s girdle, framing it in metal that flashes as you move. From the front, you see stone and star as one glittering unit; from the side, the setting is a neat, low basket that sits close to the ear — no wobbling, no drooping, no “leaning tower” effect that plagues top-heavy studs.

The post is positioned at the stud’s balance point and the butterfly back is sized to hold securely without pinching. The overall effect on the ear is a concentrated point of brilliance — the kind of earring that makes people ask “are those real?” (They’re premium cubic zirconia, hand-matched for fire, and honestly, the question is the compliment.)

The Stones

We use only the top grade of cubic zirconia for the Etoile: near-colourless (D–F equivalent), eye-clean clarity, and — critically — precision-cut to ideal brilliant proportions. CZ is often cut carelessly because the rough is cheap; ours is cut to the same angles as a fine diamond, because light doesn’t care what the material cost. Each pair is matched under daylight-balanced lamps for colour and fire; if the two stones don’t match perfectly, they don’t become a pair.

The star mount is cast as part of the setting (not soldered on after), so the points are structurally integral — they won’t snap off. Each point is hand-polished, because a dull point kills the star effect. This is fiddly work at 5mm scale, done under magnification by setters who specialise in small work.

Craftsmanship

Stud earrings live or die on symmetry: the two must match in every dimension, or the eye — ruthlessly good at spotting asymmetry in pairs — will notice. Our makers produce Etoile studs in matched pairs from the start: stones selected together, settings cast from the same mould, posts soldered at identical angles, backs fitted as a pair. Before boxing, each pair is photographed together under magnification and compared against the master standard.

The backs deserve mention: many studs fail at the clutch. Ours are firm without being stiff, with a silicone-lined inner grip that holds the post securely but releases with a straight pull (no twisting, which bends posts). They’re also slightly larger than standard, distributing pressure so the earrings stay comfortable through long days.

Care Instructions

Studs collect buildup behind the setting where stone meets metal — a monthly clean keeps them blazing. Soak in warm soapy water, brush gently behind and around the stones with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and dry. Check the butterfly backs monthly: they should grip firmly; if a back slides too easily, replace it (we provide spares on request) rather than risking a lost earring. Put studs on after hairspray and perfume. Store as a pair, backs on, in a compartment where they can’t scratch each other. The star points can be refreshed by our replating service if they ever dull.
